Tiger Woods and The Price of Fame

Date December 3, 2009

elinw-2In a special video message today, John Gray looks at the Tiger Woods story from a Mars Venus perspective.

First, however, a very brief history of what brought us to this point. Tiger Woods has found himself in the eye of a media storm this past week. It seems perfectly reasonable to suggest that this media storm is of his own making. While that is true to a certain extent, there are young couples across America who will have explosive arguments tonight over what Woods himself now calls marital “transgressions,” and none of their disputes will wind up on the evening news.

Of course Woods, who greatly prizes his privacy, may have been more successful at keeping this part of his life private as well if he had not crashed his car into his neighbor’s property at 2:25 in the morning outside his exclusive Orlando, Florida home.

Woods, who will turn 34 at the end of this month, married Swedish fashion model Elin Nordegren on October 5, 2004. On  June 18, 2007 Elin gave birth to the couple’s first child, a daughter, Sam Alexis Woods. Elin gave birth to their second child, a boy named Charlie Axel on February 8, 2009.

Yesterday, stories began to emerge about numerous affairs that Woods has had with various women in recent years. As reported in the Los Angeles Times and elsewhere, it is now surmised that the Woods’ crash was the result of a heated argument  between him and his wife. The Times said of the Woods story that it was, “Like a tricky downhill putt, it keeps rolling along, gaining momentum with each new turn.”

But as John explains, Woods actions are most likely the result of a volatile mixture of relative youth, great fame, the anxiety that fame and secret affairs can cause, and the explosive nature of male behavior when stress reaches a point of overload….
